Nicolab and Mediterraneo Hospital Launch Greece’s First AI-Powered Stroke Network, Connecting Athens with the Islands
Athens, Greece, July 2025 – Nicolab, in collaboration with Mediterraneo Hospital and Philips, is proud to announce the implementation of StrokeViewer in Greece. This marks a major clinical and strategic milestone for stroke care in the region.
This deployment establishes Greece’s first hub-and-spoke stroke network, connecting Mediterraneo Hospital in Athens (the hub) with partner hospitals on the islands of Santorini and Paros (the spokes). This model equips both metropolitan and regional hospitals with advanced, AI-driven decision support tools.
StrokeViewer, Nicolab’s end-to-end stroke workflow solution, enables clinicians to instantly review AI-analysed brain scans, allowing stroke teams to determine the best course of treatment within minutes, rather than hours.
The geographical reach of this network is especially significant. Santorini, home to around 15,000 residents, sees nearly 2 million visitors annually, while Paros hosts 13,700 residents and up to 200,000 seasonal visitors. During the summer, the rise in population puts significant pressure on local healthcare services.
By enabling real-time collaboration between hospitals, StrokeViewer helps local clinicians quickly triage patients and assess stroke severity. This allows them to make faster, informed treatment decisions, whether to administer thrombolysis on-site or arrange urgent transfer to Athens for thrombectomy.
“Nicolab is proud to work hand in hand with Nikolaos G. Tsamopoulos, MD, MSc, PhD, Director of Interventional Neuroradiology Department and his team at Mediterraneo Hospital to monitor the impact of this rollout. Together, both teams are tracking performance indicators and workflow efficiency to ensure StrokeViewer delivers tangible benefits to both clinicians and patients. We are excited to be supporting the rollout of StrokeViewer in Greece”, said Michael Macilquham, CEO of Nicolab.
“Implementing AI platform in our stroke procedures has transformed both, the speed and precision of care. For our acute stroke team, it means earlier activation and we’ve seen measurable reductions in door-to-groin times, optimising outcomes.”, as Dr. Tsamopoulos emphasised.
This milestone reflects Nicolab’s continued mission to make life-saving stroke care accessible—anywhere, anytime. As the first implementation of its kind in Greece, this network serves as a model for regional stroke systems aiming to improve speed, collaboration, and outcomes through technology.
