Nicolab, a leading technology firm specializing in AI solutions, proudly announces its participation in the UMBRELLA consortium. This groundbreaking initiative aims to improve stroke care across Europe. Co-led by the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and Siemens Healthineers, UMBRELLA brings together over 20 public and private partners. Together, they focus on enhancing the stroke care pathway—from diagnosis and treatment to long-term rehabilitation and prevention.

Currently, over one million acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes occur each year in Europe. Moreover, nearly 10 million stroke survivors face long-term challenges. Thus, the need for innovative solutions has never been greater. To address this issue, the Innovative Health Initiative will support the UMBRELLA project with nearly €27 million over the next five years. This initiative is a collaboration between the European Union’s Horizon Europe research program and several industry associations, including COCIR, EFPIA, EuropaBio, MedTech Europe, and Vaccines Europe.

Furthermore, UMBRELLA aims to reshape stroke management by addressing key gaps in care. In particular, the initiative will enhance early diagnosis, emergency intervention, and rehabilitation. Consequently, this comprehensive approach promises to significantly improve patient outcomes. “UMBRELLA represents a transformative shift in stroke care,” says Dr. Carlos Molina, Head of the Stroke Research Group at VHIR and scientific coordinator of the project. “It offers thousands of stroke patients in Europe access to personalized diagnostics and cutting-edge treatments.”

To summarize the objectives of the project the main five are:

1. Enhanced Stroke Care for Patients Leading to Better Health Outcomes

2. Harness the Potential of AI-based Technologies to Advance Stroke Management

3. Integrated Industry Solutions for Coordinated Decision-making and Efficient Stroke Care

4. Better Healthcare Decisions with Improved Integrated Data Access

5. Standardise, harmonise and integrate in a federated manner real world stroke data.

As part of the consortium, Nicolab will deploy its AI-powered StrokeViewer tool across 5 hub hospitals and 11 to 15 spoke hospitals to accelerate decision-making and streamline patient transfers for faster treatment. In addition, StrokeViewer’s advanced AI algorithms will automatically identify intracerebral hemorrhages (ICH) and predict both ICH volume expansion and 24-hour neurological deterioration, significantly improving ICH management workflows.

Overall Nicolab’s role in this initiative is crucial, and we’re excited to be part of such a groundbreaking project.
